A robust understanding of subsurface conditions is critical to evaluating the feasibility and economics of geological CO₂ storage. The Geological Carbon Storage Atlas of Eastern Canada, a project commissioned by Natural Resources Canada with support from carbon removal project developer Deep Sky and completed in conjunction with CanmetENERGY, provides a high-level regional assessment of two key geological CO₂ storage opportunities: saline aquifers and depleted or nearly depleted oil and gas reservoirs. This presentation will summarize the methodology used to estimate CO₂ storage capacity in the Atlas including the geological and reservoir parameters considered in the assessment. It will also highlight the distribution of prospective CO2 storage resources across Quebec and Atlantic Canada, and present estimated costs per tonne of CO₂ injected throughout the region.
