This study involved a scoping level investigation into the deep aquifer geothermal potential in Alberta. Heat flow and geothermal gradients are used to delineate the highest potential regions. Subsurface characterization of deep aquifers were conducted to determine the potential targets. Oil field production data was used as a proxy for aquifer deliverability. A brief overview of heat exchange technology was provided. Current geothermal pilot projects in western Canada were identified as examples.
Specific geothermal prospects were identified in Devonian reef aquifers (Leduc, Swan Hills) and the Basal Cambrian Sandstone.
