This study entails the evaluation of the geology, hydrogeology and reserve potential of the upper Viking Formation from Wintering Hills to Verger and Bantry in southern Alberta. The upper Viking Formation can be divided into five separate marine shoreface stratigraphic units, which can be defined as sea level fluctuations at the time of deposition, and on a regional scale prograde from southwest to northeast into the basin. The clean and porous sandstone distribution of each of these units can be mapped, and areas of continuous reservoir can be identified. The primary goals of this study are to use a multi-disciplinary approach to determine and map the distribution of the gas reserves, and to understand the specific geologic, hydrogeological or reservoir parameters, which control the distribution of gas in the upper Viking Formation in this area.
