The South Duvernay Oil Play Marches Northwestward

The south Duvernay oil play is marching northwestward. The map shows parcels that include Duvernay rights purchased since January 1, 2016 symbolized by sale date. Approximately $438MM has been spent one these parcels. 2016 sales are coloured in blue hues, 2017 in greens to yellow, and 2018 in orange to red. There also several large postings for the August 22, 2018 sale. Most of the acreage on the west side of the Rimbey–Meadowbrook reef trend from Pembina to Wildwood was purchased in late 2017 and 2018. The Duvernay isotherms from CDL’s Gas-Liquids and Light Oil Atlas, which roughly outline the phase windows, indicate that most of the acreage purchased is in the oil to volatile oil phase windows.

Several wells targeting the Duvernay in the northern extension, operated by Teine, Raging River, Canadian Coastal and Black Bear Management, have been spudded since June 1, 2017. The three wells that have come on-stream so far in 2018 (still confidential) have oil as the major component, and may bode well for more Duvernay development between Pembina and Wildwood.
