Geomechanics is one of the keys to drilling Montney horizontal wells in the Deep Basin at Karr, AB. In this study, a geomechanical model was developed to determine safe drilling mud weight windows for the planned trajectories for future Montney horizontal wells. This model was also used for evaluating the potential for high treating pressures and hydraulic fracture reorientation when designing completion programs. Deliverables in this study include a geomechanical assessment of Montney horizontal wells in the Karr area, an estimate of geomechanical parameters and an examination of the implications for wellbore stability, hydraulic fracturing and production from natural fractures.
