Smart, actionable analytics require clean and reliable data. Resource plays generate a lot of data and the more you can trust it, the more efficient and effective your decision making can become.

Pressure, temperature and chemistry data are some of the key inputs for enhancing our understanding of OGIP, liquids yield and recovery factor. It is BIG DATA. However, supplied in its raw form through standard data vendors, it is often dirty. Users are challenged by inconsistent reporting, buried files, variations of test types, dates, zones, etc. Canadian Discovery (CDL) has used these data for decades while conducting hundreds of hydrodynamic and reservoir studies, and we understand the challenges of preparing these data for advanced analytics.

With a proven history of creating advanced datasets and applications, such as the Well Completions & Frac Database, Play Metrics, Geofluids and Hydrostation, we are proud to launch our newest offering. At CDL, we recognize that an effective and economic reservoir drainage strategy requires an understanding of the reservoir’s pressure depletion front during production and its effect on fluid phase behaviour. The Fluid Dynamics Database (CDFD) saves you time by tying wells to their pads, instills confidence in the data through CDL’s quality coding, and provides workflow enhancement with visualization tools and Spotfire templates. The CDFD is fully exportable and available through CDL Connect.

The Uncertainty of Pressure

Pressure data, when supplied in their raw form through standard data vendors, can be fraught with errors due to insufficient shut-in times, over- or under-extrapolation, erroneous DFITs, production induced drawdown (PID) and incorrect recorder depths, etc. CDL has used these data for decades while conducting hydrodynamic and reservoir studies and has established processes to quality-control the data within a stratigraphic context. When an anomalous pressure is identified, we go back to the source—the reports.

Trouble with Temperature

Downhole temperatures have an obvious correlation to OGIP, but a much stronger influence on in situ hydrocarbon phase and therefore liquids yield. A few degrees can make the difference between a 50 bbl/mmcf yield vs 150 bbl/mmcf yield. Reported temperature data are often erroneous due to recorder depth discrepancies, insufficient shut-in or flow times or use of assumed values from test analysis such as DFITs. What’s My Liquids?

Gas chemistry data are critical for resource determination, calculating and monitoring liquids yields, as well as thermal maturity and migration characterization. However, inconsistencies in corporate reporting, sampling points and pressures can create noise that can hide both opportunity and risk. CDL’s in-depth research and mapping of key indices provides an invaluable background for identifying representative gas samples and understanding their economic implications.
